En esta ocasión, viajamos hasta Phoenix, Arizona, para hablar con Janis Wood, una amiga enamorada de Carcassonne y de la Edad Media (y suponemos que también de su marido).

This time we travel to Phoenix, Arizona, to talk with Janis Wood, a friend in love with Carcassonne and the Middle Ages (and we guess so is she with her husband).

Los juegos de mesa están viviendo un gran boom en el mundo, ¿ocurre también en Los Estados Unidos?

Board games are experiencing a boom in virtually all the world, also happens in USA?

Por supuesto. En la ciudad en la que vivo, hay tiendas dedicadas a juegos de mesa y de cartas. Y no sólo venden, también tienen zonas donde la gente puede venir y jugar a diferentes juegos. Además, algunas tiendas organizan torneos.

Definitely. There are shops in the city I live in that are devoted entirely to board and card games. Not only do they sell the games but they have areas in the stores where people can come and play the various games. Some of the shops also hold tournaments for different games.

¿Cómo es el mundo de los juegos de mesa en tu país?

How is the world of board games in your country?

Creciendo. Las ventas de los juegos de mesa se han duplicado en los dos últimos años. Y también la variedad. Hay juegos para un solo jugador, dos jugadores, grupos, de estrategia, de suerte o basados en los conocimientos. Pienso también que, con la llegada de multitud de fuentes de financiación, hay un muchas personas que han producido juegos al margen de las compañías tradicionales.

Growing. Sales of board games have had double digit increases in the past couple of years. Also the variety of games has increased so that you have solo, two player, group, strategic, luck, and knowledge based games. I also think that with the advent of crowd sourced funding, there are a lot of individuals out there who have produced games that wouldn't have been done by the traditional "gaming" companies and that has increased the appeal of gaming.

¿Crees que Carcassonne es un juego muy popular?

Does the game Carcassonne think is very popular?

Sí. Entre mis amigos es uno de los que más usamos cuando nos reunimos. También se ha incrementado su juego con los móviles, tablets y ordenadores. 

Extremely. Amongst my friends, it is one of the regular "go-to" games to play when we get together. With the game offered on telephones, tablets and computers, there is also an increase in play.

How did you know this game?

Lo vi en una de mis tiendas de juegos y los propietarios me lo recomendaron. También vimos que había ganado numerosos premios en Europa; así que lo compramos y hemos sido aficionados desde entonces. 

I saw this game in one of my local game stores and the owners highly recommended it. We also saw that it had won numerous awards in Europe; so we purchased it and have been fans ever since.

How long ago did you play?

No recuerdo exactamente, pero fue en algún momento de la década de los 2000.

I can't remember exactly but sometime in the early 2000's.

¿Qué te gusta de Carcassonne?

What do you like of Carcassonne?

La buena combinación entre estrategia y suerte. No puedes anticipar qué losetas habrá o qué hará el contrincante con esas losetas y hay gente que se concentra en sus actividades, otros en bloquear las del oponente y algunos hacen una combinación de lo anterior.

It is a good combination of a strategic and luck based game. You really can't anticipate what tiles you are going to get and what your opponent will do with the tiles they get. Some people concentrate on their own activities, some concentrate on blocking their opponents plays and some do a combination.

¿Sueles jugar con el básico o con alguna expansión?

Do you usually play with basic or expansion?

Hemos pasado más tiempo jugando al básico con una o dos expansiones como el río. Pero realmente hemos disfrutado de todas las versiones, de todas las expansiones.

I'd say we spend more time playing the basic game with one or two of the expansions thrown in (river...) but we have certainly played and enjoyed all of the expansion versions.

¿Conoces todas las losetas que existen en el Carcassonne básico?

Do you know all the tiles that are in the basic Carcassonne?

No puedo decir que sé a ciencia cierta cuántos de cada tipo de losetas hay, pero sé muy bien los tipos. No juego de forma agresiva, juego por diversión.

I can't say that I know for sure how many of each type of tiles there are but I know the kinds. I don't really play aggressively but I play for fun.

I have understood that you also play online ...

Me encanta jugar on-line. Soy una persona nocturna y mi marido o mis amigos no siempre están cuando me apetece jugar.

Love to play on-line. I'm a night person and my husband, friends are not always available when I'm ready for a game.

Carcassonne está situado en la Edad Media, una época que no vivieron Los Estados Unidos. ¿Crees que existe un interés general por la Edad Media en EE.UU?

Carcassonne is set in medieval times, an era that did not live the United States. Do you think there is interest in general in the Middle Ages in USA?

Por supuesto. Además de jugar a Carcassone, mi marido y yo pertenecemos a grupos de reconstrucción histórica medieval activos en Los Estados Unidos. 

Absolutely. In addition to playing Carcassone, my husband and I belong to one of several medieval reenactment groups that are currently active in the US. 

Si pudieras pedir una versión de Carcassonne sobre otra época, ¿cuál elegirias?

If you could ask for a version of Carcassonne set in another era, which one would you choose?
